Acting Dance Band/Orchestra Jazz Indian Indian Performing Arts Summer Camp June 28-July 2, 2010 Samir Chatterjee, Director Leave your children with us and we will teach them about Indian music, dance, and culture. Admission to the camp is open to children ages 8-15. Between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., students will participate in daily yoga classes, vocal training, rhythm sessions, dance and movement classes, exposure to different musical instruments, audio-visual sessions, and discussion forums. Our distinguished faculty will fascinate the students while teaching them the significant aspects of Indian music and dance. Early drop-off (starting at 8:00 a.m.) and late pick-up (until 5:30 p.m.) is available for an additional fee. In addition to the general sessions during the daytime, we also offer private lessons for qualified students with special interest. About Samir Chatterjee As a virtuoso tabla player, Chatterjee performs all over the world in festivals as a soloists and with other outstanding musicians from both Indian and western traditions. The national radio and television of India maintains him as an A-rated artist. In concert, Chatterjee performed with Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, Jasraj, Amjad Ali Khan, William Parker, Branford Marsalis, Ravi Coltrane, Dance Theater of Harlem, and Boston Philharmonic, to name only a few. Chatterjee teaches at Yale University, University of Pittsburgh, Manhattan School of Music, and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Join us for an afternoon concert on Sunday, June 27! To introduce the new program to the community, Mason Gross School of the Arts has arranged a very special free concert at 2:00 p.m. at Nicholas Music Center. The concert will feature some of the best dancers of Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Odissi in collaboration. The musical performance will be a Jugalbandi of Carnatic and Hindustani music, featuring some of India's best musicians.
Rutgers Summer Acting Conservatory June 27–July 25, 2010 Marshall Jones, Director Talented high school students are invited to apply to this highly competitive, four-week conservatory acting program. Daily training includes classes in acting, movement, and voice/speech. Students also participate in master classes, directing, singing, intensive workshops, special seminars, and classes in theater history, theater appreciation, and stage craft. All classes are taught by working theater professionals. Other activities include weekly trips into New York City for major productions, followed by discussion and analysis. Emphasis is placed on developing fundamental acting skills and truthful on-stage behavior. Students interested in musicals may apply to the Musical Theater track to study our celebrated acting technique with equal focus on singing and dancing, taught by experienced Broadway professionals. The conservatory faculty is dedicated to providing students with a safe, challenging, high-quality learning environment where each student will grow and develop as a young theater artist. Students will reside in college dormitories within walking distance of their classes. Meals are provided by the college cafeterias. College counselors reside in the dormitories to oversee, support, and ensure the safety of students. July 5-10, 2010 John Evans, Director Young dancers, ages 12-18, may apply for intensive study in contemporary modern dance with renowned faculty from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Dancers will take daily classes in contemporary dance, ballet, theater work, improvisation, and repertory. The week includes a field trip into New York City to attend a dance concert and concludes with a public showing of the participants’ work. $1150 (includes tuition, room, board, and activities) Those interested in applying should contact John Evans at jevans@rci.rutgers.edu.
July 12-23, 2010 John Evans, Director A two-week conservatory program geared towards students ages 15-20 who plan to pursue a career in dance. The program is designed to prepare the intermediate and advanced dancer to enter a college dance program and help realize his/her goals in the dance world. Students will take daily classes in ballet and modern dance. Additional classes include modern partnering, modern and ballet repertory, jazz, hip hop, and improvisation, The two weeks incorporate a day of master classes by New York area artists and a field trip to the Jersey shore for a day of relaxation. The Rutgers Summer Band and Orchestra Camp July 11-16, 2010 Jeffrey Grogan (New Jersey Symphony Orchestra), Orchestra Darryl Bott (Rutgers Symphony Band), Band Student in Grades 8-12 perform under the batons of renowned conductors and enjoy a week of intense musical training at Mason Gross School of the Arts on Rutgers University’s New Brunswick campus. Camp faculty consists of Mason Gross college faculty members and leading professional musicians and music educators from the New York/New Jersey area. Each day, students will participate in large ensemble rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, group lessons, and clinics. Evening activities include faculty recitals, a special performance by Boston Brass, and recreational/social activities. The camp will conclude with student performances in Nicholas Music Center. Students have the option to either commute or live in university housing and are under careful supervision by camp faculty and counselors during all activities. Members of the All-State Band or Orchestra qualify for a $150 scholarship. July 25-30, 2010 Conrad Herwig, Director Don Glasgo, Associate Director Located on the New Brunswick campus, the Rutgers Summer Jazz Institute is a comprehensive workshop environment for young musicians ages 13-20 interested in improving their jazz improvisation, small group, and large ensemble skills. This is a unique opportunity to participate in daily listening sessions, master classes, and large ensemble and small group rehearsals with the distinguished jazz faculty of Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Attendees have the option to either commute or live in university housing and are under supervision by camp faculty and counselors during all activities. Evening activites for resident campers include faculty recitals, jazz films, and a trip into Manhattan to experience the New York jazz scene first-hand. Commuters may opt to attend the evening recitals and trips into Manhattan. The camp concludes with student performances in Nicholas Music Center.
